CAMBRIDGE LANGUAGE IMMERSION PROGRAMS
Martin Luther King, Jr. Chinese Immersion
Chinese Immersion at MLK is based on the partial immersion model from JK to the fifth grade. MLK has an eight hour school day. 50% of the instruction is provided in English, and 50% in Chinese. Students learn content such as math, science, and social studies in English and Chinese. Beginning in Sept 2014, all MLK students in grades 3-5, may opt to participate in content classes (math, science and social studies) in Chinese. This opportunity is available to MLK Chinese Immersion students, and MLK's monolingual Nihao students. Click here to read the MLK's Program Design Committee's proposed model for grades 3-5.
King Open Olá Program
The Olá Program implements a developmental Portuguese-English two-way language immersion model of instruction, serving native speakers of English and of Portuguese. Students receive 50% of their instruction in English and 50% in Portuguese. Olá is a junior kindergarten through eighth grade program.
Amigos School, founded on a dual-language immersion model, is a rigorous academic program where students receive 50% English and 50% Spanish instruction and are expected to become biliterate - to read, write and speak with the same high level of proficiency in both Spanish and English. This model is based on an equal respect for different languages as well as for the cultures of which those languages are a part. The Amigos School begins in JK and runs through the eighth grade.
